Many expectant mothers experience lower back pain during pregnancy. Unfortunately, this is a common and often unavoidable discomfort due to the physical changes and increasing demands placed on the body.

Factors such as postural changes, hormonal changes, weight gain, muscle imbalances and stress can all contribute to these aches and pains, which we will look at in more detail in this blog to help expectant mothers navigate their bodily changes through pregnancy and stay comfortable and pain free as much as possible.

  • Postural changes

As pregnancy progresses, this causes a shift in a woman’s centre of gravity as the baby grows and expands the mother’s abdomen. To compensate for this shift, the body naturally adjusts its posture, which often leads to an increase arch in the lower back.

This can put strain on muscles, ligaments and joints in the lower back, causing lower back pain.

  • Weight gain and hormonal changes

As the baby grows, the extra weight also places increased stress on the spine and pelvis. This additional weight, combined with the softening of ligaments caused by hormonal changes, can lead to further strain on the lower back, causing pain and discomfort.

  • Muscle imbalances and weakness

As the uterus expands, the abdominal muscles stretch and weaken, whilst the muscles in the lower back work harder and tighten to maintain posture and support the growing bump. This muscle imbalance can lead to pain in the lower back.

  • Stress and emotional factors

Naturally, pregnancy is an emotional journey, and stress can exacerbate physical discomfort. Stress can contribute to increased muscle tension in the neck, shoulders and lower back.

How can we at Stafford chiropractic clinic help?

As we have highlighted in this blog, pregnancy causes many changes to the body, which can produce discomfort in a number of different areas. Chiropractors work to alleviate these discomforts whilst increasing movement and maintaining pelvic alignment.

Chiropractors can adapt their treatment technique to cater for an expectant mother, by utilising the adjustable tables and pregnancy pillows for comfort, whilst delivering gentle adjustments, stretching exercises and soft tissue techniques to address musculoskeletal issues and provide as much comfort as possible to both the baby and the mother.

Whilst chiropractic care is generally safe during pregnancy, it is crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare provider and chiropractor. You should inform them about your pregnancy health, any specific concerns and any underlying health conditions you may have.

This ensures that your care is tailored to your needs, and any potential risks or contraindications are taken into account before commencing treatment.
