For every generation

In previous articles we have discussed the benefit of chiropractic care for all ages. It is completely safe and beneficial for everyone – from birth right through to old age. For our older patients we appreciate that there are many changes the body goes through – including legacy ailments from a lifetime of activity. Even the most preserved of bodies are prone to reduced muscle tone, loss of bone density, stiffer joints and a less than perfectly balanced frame and posture. Bad backs, aches and pains and trapped nerves are all common complaints at any age!

At Stafford Chiropractic Clinic we treat many older people every day. We have patients who are very keen to stay supple and flexible so they come to us for advice. We have patients who see us to ease and reduce suffering from a long-term injury and also others who enjoy the results they get from the relaxation therapy provided by our massage therapists. Some of our older patients have mobility issues that we work with them to improve.

Something we often do for our older patients is to teach some basic exercises so they can practise them at home in between chiro sessions. These exercises might be to improve muscle strength or correct posture whist sitting or standing. They will be designed individually and focus on key areas for improvement.

Naturally we tailor our intervention techniques according to the person we are treating, using the right amount of pressure or manipulation. Our clinic is multi-disciplinary which means we might recommend a mix of massage, acupuncture or manipulation – whatever is needed to achieve effective results, comfortably.

Ultimately, chiropractic care can provide older people with much-needed confidence. It can help provide the safety net that empowers them to continue with sport or continue to live independently.

If you’d like to know more and find out if we can help you live your best life, please do come and see us for independent, caring advice on the potential for gentle, non-invasive chiropractic treatment.

Top tips:

  • Don’t ignore pain of any kind – see your doctor or health care professional, including your local chiropractor, for advice
  • Keep moving little and often, sitting for extended periods is not beneficial. Set a gentle reminder every hour if you need a reminder to change position
  • Use a step counter or FitBit style watch to see how many steps you take each day so that you can maintain this or set yourself a new target
  • Maintain any exercise you are doing, increasing slowly if you wish to
  • Rest as much as you need to
  • Hydrate well all day long, regardless of your activity levels
  • Join a local walking group to make exercise more sociable and fun
  • Stretching and bending safely will improve your flexibility
  • Try new things – massage and acupuncture are not the preserve of the young!
