Sports massage

Stresses and strains on the body accumulate in all of us from time to time, no matter if you lead a sedentary or very active lifestyle. For example:

  • Sitting for many hours at a desk/computer
  • Excessive digging/pruning in the garden
  • Training hard for a marathon/getting fit for a charity cycle ride

These activities (although very different) can all upset the fine balance in the soft tissues of the body (i.e. muscles tendons and ligaments). This upset can result in stress, pain, stiffness and even injury.

Sports Massage Therapy is an ideal way to help prevent and alleviate these symptoms. Sports Massage Therapy can also help complement other therapies such as Chiropractic. Ask your practitioner if it may be of benefit to you.


How does it work?

Our muscles are surrounded by a thin membrane of connective tissue called fascia. This fascia is normally moist, allowing the muscles to glide freely over each other as they contract and relax.

Following repetitive use or injury, this fascia becomes thick and hardens. The muscles are now unable to function efficiently. This can lead to restricted circulation, restricted joint mobility and inflammation of surrounding soft tissue.

Sports massage techniques help to warm, relax, lengthen and separate the soft tissue fascia. As a result, range of movement is improved and pain is reduced.


What can you expect from a sports massage treatment?

Your first visit as a new patient will take approximately 1 hour. One of our Sports Massage Therapists will take a record of your medical history and then discuss and evaluate the soft tissue requiring treatment.

All treatments are tailored to the needs of the patient. Some or all of the following techniques may be used:

  • Gentle techniques to warm and relax muscles
  • Deep tissue techniques to release more stubborn tension e.g. Trigger Point Therapy
  • Stretching techniques
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Exercise/Stretching advice

Subsequent appointments can be arranged for 30 minutes or 1 hour depending on the extent of the problem and condition needing treatment.
